Dear Chess Friends,
Please find in this letter the following information by the European Chess Union.
A. European Championships over the board relaunch in August:
- The European Women’s Chess Championship 2021 will take place in Iasi Romania from 8th August (arrival) to 21st August departure. More information here.
- The European Senior Team Championship 2021 will take place in Polanica-Zdroj, Poland from 10th to 20th August 2021. Invitation will follow.
- The European Open Individual Championship 2021 will take place in Reykjavik, Iceland from 25th August (arrival) to 6th September (departure). Invitation will follow.
Participants should follow the National and ECU protocols outlined in the official regulations, but it will be new information as European countries update their travel/health policies ahead of the summer period.
B. ECU competitions and events in May:
- The European Hybrid Qualification Tournament will take place from 22nd to 30th of May 2021 as have been announced. Federations have received additional information about the venues.
- The traditional Mitropa Cup will be organized in Hybrid mode from 3rd to 12th May 2021. The event is organized by the Swiss Chess Federation and is supported by ECU as an affiliated event. More information here.
- European Chess Union in co-operation with German Youth Chess Federation and the support of FIDE Women’s and FIDE PDC Commission, presents the European Girl’s and Women’s Weekend on 14-16 May. We invite all European Girl’s and Women to join us for a weekend full of chess. More information here.
- The 1st Online Workshop “Equal Opportunities” will take place from 16th-19th of May. The event is a co-operation of ECU, FIDE Commission of the Disabled and FIDE PDC Commission. 100 participants have already registered for the Workshop.

ECU produced a special chess promotional video dedicated to European Chess history and heritage. The video presented in the opening ceremony for the European Parliamentary Tournament.
European Chess Union thanks the European Investment Bank – Institute
which decided to support financially ECU youth training programs in 2021
through the European Chess Academy. The cooperation may be extended in annual basis.
