Two rounds have already been played at the European Amateur Chess Championship 2018, which takes place from 14th-21st June in Niksic, Montenegro with participation of 180 players from 18 European federations, which is the new record of the event.
The Opening Ceremony of the event, which was attended by Manager of the Municipality of Niksic, Mr. Zivko Kecojevic and the President of Montenegro Chess Federation, Mr. Grba Radojica, took place before the start of the first round. After the performance of the local dance group, the Manαger of the Municipality of Niksic addressed all players and guests, wished them luck and officially opened the event.
The Championship is played in 3 different rating categories: U2300, U2000, U1700. The separate competition for Women players is established for section U1700, while the Women competitions in other sections are merged with the Open sections, with separate prizes.
In the category U2300, a few players suffered upsets in the first rounds of the event, and after two played rounds, 7 players tie for the first place with a maximum result and score of 2 points. In section U2000 only 5 players emerged on the top with maximum 2/2, while in the section U1700 11 players have the same score of 2 points. In Women U1700 section there are 6 players with the same score and maximum result of 2 points. The third round, which will be played today at 10:00(local time) will clarify the situation on the top of the lists of each category.

The Championship is played in 9 rounds, Swiss system, with time control 90 minutes for 40 moves+ 30 minutes for the rest of the game, with an increment of 30 seconds per move, starting from the move one.
The total prize fund of the event is 5.000 EUR. Top three players of the each category will be awarded with cups and medals, while Women players will be awarded separately. The Winners of the event will receive the title of the European Amateur Chess Champion for 2018 for the category the player participated.
