The European Chess Union (ECU) mourns the passing of Grandmaster Jan Timman, one of the most celebrated Dutch chess players and a towering figure in the international chess community. Born in Amsterdam in 1951, Jan Timman rose to prominence as a leading contender on the world stage, earning the title of International Grandmaster in 1974. He was renowned for his imaginative play, deep strategic understanding, and his fighting spirit at the board. Timman competed at the highest levels, including Candidates matches and World Championship cycles, and was widely regarded as the strongest non-Soviet player of his generation.
Throughout his illustrious career, Timman was not only a formidable competitor but also an influential author and editor. His books and analyses have enriched chess literature, inspiring countless players across Europe and beyond. His contributions to chess journalism and his role as editor of “New In Chess” magazine further cemented his impact on the game.
