The Icelandic Chess Championship took place from 22nd August to 30th August and concluded this Sunday in the town of Gardabaer.
Before the final 9th round, two players led scoring 6 points: IM Gudmundur Kjartansson (2466) and GM Helgi Gretarsson (2401). GM Hjorvar Steinn Gretarsson (2579) and GM Bragi Thorfinnsson (2427) were chasing tame with 5 points each, and were in a tie for the third place.

The pairings of the last round between the leaders could possibly bring the finals of the event to the 4 players play-off which would determine the leader.
In the intense finish, IM Kjartansson Gudmundur drew against GM Gretarsson Hjorvar Steinn and emerged on the top with 6.5 points, while GM Gretarsson Helgi lost against GM Thorfinnsson Bragi and lost the leading position.

Scoring 6.5 points, IM Kjartansson Gudmundur was announced as a Icelandic Chess Champion for the 3rd time in his chess career.

The tournament was held with some strict regulations, with no audience and plenty of space between board. Players had to leave immediately after their games and separately. No common area was provided for food and drinks so players had to bring their own snacks.
And of course, there were no handshakes!
