The European Youth U18 Team Chess Championship 2016 started yesterday in Hotel Celeia, in Celje/Slovenia.
The Championship is organized by the Slovenian Chess Federation, under the auspices of the European Chess Union, and it takes place from 9th to 17th July.
The Championship is played according to the Swiss system in 7 rounds, with boys and girls playing separately in Open and Girl’s section. The time control of the Championship is 90 min for 40 moves + 30 min for the rest of the game + 30 seconds increment for every move played starting from the first move.
Before the start of the first round the short opening ceremony took place, with attendance of the players, tournament officials, trainers and coaches and other distinguished guests.
The ECU was represented by Mr. Petr Pisk, the ECU Tournament Director and Mr. Adrian Mikhalchishin, member of the ECU Board.
The tournament started with upsets, as the second seed in the Open section – Turkey A, lost to Ukraine with 2.5-1.5, while in Girl’s section both 1st and 2nd seeds Ukraine and Hungary tied their matches with Czech Republic A and Germany respectively.
