Communication of the ECU Board Meeting

The European Chess Union held its latest Board Meeting on 19 August 2025, via Zoom, chaired by ECU President Zurab Azmaiparashvili.

Key Information and Decisions

  • The ECU Board discussed and decided on the special prizes to be awarded at the 40th anniversary gala on 11th of October in Batumi. An ECU anniversary book will be published, and various promotional activities will take place.
  • The Board considered a letter from the Isle of Man Chess Association to become an associate member of the ECU, together with a proposed resolution from the English Chess Federation. The ECU Board will recommend to the ECU General Assembly that the Isle of Man Chess Association be accepted as an associate member.
  • The ECU TV will offer new broadcasting opportunities to interested parties with live video broadcasts, materials and interviews. The broadcast packages will be tested in a pilot project at the upcoming European Club Cup 2025.

European Chess Championships

  • The Board reviewed and approved a proposal to revive the European Junior Chess Championship U20. The proposal will be submitted to the ECU General Assembly for discussion and final approval.
  • The Board unanimously awarded the organization of the European Individual Chess Championship 2026 to Katowice, Poland. The Championship will take place from 7 to 19 April 2026.
  • The following European Championships were awarded:
    • European Amateur Chess Championship 2026 – Istanbul, Turkey
    • European Seniors Team Chess Championship 2027 – Aqui Terme, Italy
    • European Women’s Chess Championship 2027, combined with the European Club Cup 2028 – Mellieha, Malta
  • The next ECU Board Meeting will take place in Batumi, Georgia, on 10 October 2025, one day prior to the annual ECU General Assembly.
