Statement by the ECU President

Regarding the expiration of the deadline for the Russian Chess Federation to comply with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) decision and its current position, I would like to state the following:

From today 10th of June 2026, the FIDE has no alternative but to implement the CAS ruling and proceed with the suspension of the Russian Chess Federation, in accordance with FIDE Ethics Commission decisions and the FIDE Charter.

I trust that all individuals in responsible management positions will share this position, as we must collectively safeguard the integrity of our sporting institutions.

We should also recall that the European Chess Union was, to my knowledge, the only European federation from which the Russian Chess Federation withdrew in order to join Asia, a development that followed our consistent and principled stance at the time.

To avoid any misunderstanding, I would like to reiterate that in 2014, the ECU General Assembly unanimously decided to fully respect the sporting jurisdiction of Ukraine over Crimea. That principle should apply universally, regardless of the country concerned, and it remains valid today. Nothing has changed in this regard.
