European Team Chess Championship 2025 starts in Batumi, Georgia

The 2025 European Team Chess Championship is set to take place from 4-15 October in Batumi, Georgia.

The event is played in 9 rounds, swiss system, with Open and Women’s sections separately. 76 teams participate in the Championship, with 40 teams in Open section and 36 teams in Women’s competition, and very strong fields in both tournaments.

The rating favourites in the Open section are Germany (average rating of players 2681), Netherlands (average rating of players 2675), Hungary (average rating of players 2666), Azerbaijan (average rating of players 2660), England (average rating of players 2639), Armenia (average rating of players 2638), Serbia (average rating of players 2635), Spain (average rating of players 2631), Ukraine (average rating of players 2629) and Greece (average rating of players 2609).

Europe’s top players will represent their federations in the Championship, and the top rated players are: GM Anish Giri (NED,2759), GM Vincent Keymer (GER, 2755), GM Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (AZE, 2742), GM Richard Rapport (HUN, 2724), GM Vladimir Fedoseev (SLO, 2720), GM Jorden Van Foreest (NED, 2697), GM Matthias Bluebaum (GER, 2687), GM Kirill Alekseenko (AUT, 2679), GM Igor Kovalenko (UKR, 2669), and GM Shant Sargsyan (ARM, 2667).

The Women’s Championship is headlined by teams of: Georgia 1 (average rating of players 2451), Poland (average rating of players 2397), Ukraine (average rating of players 2379), Azerbaijan (average rating of players 2362), Bulgaria (average rating of players 2357), Germany (average rating of players 2339), Spain (average rating of players 2337), Armenia (average rating of players 2337), France (average rating of players 2333) and Switzerland (average rating of players 2321).

The fixed board order of the teams will be published after the Technical meeting which is scheduled to take place on 4th of October at 23:00 (local time). The Opening ceremony of the event will take place on the next day, shortly before the start of the 1st round, and it is scheduled for October 5th, 14:30 (local time).

Live broadcast of the games will be available through the ECU TV channel and al major broadcasting platforms. The live commentary with GM Alojzije Jankovic, GM Valeriane Gaprindashvili and WGM Keti Tsatsalashvili will exclusively be broadcasted through the ECU TV and ECU YouTube channel.
