European Senior Team Chess Championship 2023 starts in Poland

The European Senior Team Chess Championship 2023 kicks off tomorrow in the city of Swidnica, Poland, and will be played from 12th-20th July.

The event is played in two age categories: 50+ and 65+ with participation of 28 teams coming from 13 European federations. Women’s events will be merged with the Open section with separate prizes for the best ranked women’s teams.  Each team consists of four players and optionally one reserve player. The teams may represent a National Federation or any regional structure of a National Federation (club teams, city teams, regional teams, national teams, or simply friends, etc. – there is no limitation)

The tournaments are played in 9 rounds, swiss system, with the time control of 90 minutes for 40 moves + 30 minutes for the rest of the game + 30 seconds increment for every move played.

The top-seeded players in the tournament are: GM John Emms (England 50+ 1, 2448), GM Mark Hebden (England 50+ 1), GM Glenn Flear (England 50+ 1), GM John Nunn (England 65+ 1, 2570), GM Lubomir Ftacnik (Slovakia 65+, 2457), GM Nikolay Legky (France Cercle d’Echecs de Strasbourg, 2360), and others.

The Captain’s meeting will be held tonight, and the first round starts tomorrow at 15:00 CEST. The Opening ceremony of the event will take place shortly before the start of the first round.

The Winners of the European Open and Women’s Senior Team Championships 50+ and 65+ will be awarded the title of the European Senior Team Champion 2023 of the respective category. The total prize fund of the event is 6.000 EUR.
