The European Senior Chess Championship 2024 starts tomorrow and takes place from October 25 to November 3 in Lignano Sabbiadoro, Italy.
The event is played in two age categories: 50+ and 65+, open and women’s sections separately. Each Championship will be played in 9 rounds, swiss system, with the time control of 90 minutes for 40 moves followed by 30 minutes for the rest of the game with an addition of 30 seconds per move
starting from move 1.
Nearly 180 players coming from 31 European federations registered for the event and compete for the title of the European Senior Chess Champion 2024.
The top seeds in the 50+ Open section are IM Edwin Van Haastert (Netherlands, 2415), IM Christof Sielecki (Germany, 2405), and GM Paul Motwani (Scotland, 2399), while IM Silvia Alexieva (France, 2181), WGM Tatiana Grabuzova (Spain, 2169) and WGM Marina Makropoulou (Greece, 2082) headline the field in the Women’s 50+ Championship.
GM John Nunn (ENG, 2546), GM Zurab Sturua (Georgia, 2502) and GM Rainer Knaak (Germany, 2458) are the top rated players of the Open 65+ event, and GM Nona Gaprindashvili (Georgia, 2243), WIM Brigitte Burchardt (Germany, 2101) and WFM Mira Kierzek (Germany, 1967) are the top rated Women’s 65+ players.

The Opening ceremony of the event will take place tomorrow, shortly before the start of the first round which is scheduled for 15:00 CET.
