European Amateur Chess Championship 2025 starts in Malta

The European Amateur Chess Championships 2025 is set to take place from 25 November to 5 December in Mellieha, Malta.

The event is played in three age categories: U2300, U2000, and U1700, and each Championship will be played in 9 rounds, swiss system, with the time control of 90 minutes for 40 moves, plus 30 minutes until the end of the game, with 30-second increment for each move starting from move one.

The event is played at the Conference Hall of the 4-star “Riviera Spa Resort” Hotel in Mellieha, Malta, which is also the official hotel of the Championship.

The total prize fund of the events is 4.600 euros, and the best ranked players in each category will become European Amateur Chess Champions 2025 for the respective sections. The best-raked Women players in each section will become European Women Amateur Chess Champions 2025 for the respective rating category.

The rating favourites in the U2300 Championship are: CM Habil Javadov (AZE, 2241), CM Stefan-Emilian Prisacaru (ROU, 2216) and Kari Kinnunen (FIN, 2148). Dominic Gibbs (ENG, 1982), Olgierd Zielinski (POL, 1951) and Dariy Kelbas (UKR, 1934) headline the field of the U2000 category, and Iraida Mainau Casadevall (ESP, 1695), WCM Martina Portelli and Cardoso Aylton Vasconcellos (POR, 1600) are the top seeds in the U1700 section.

The first round of the event starts tomorrow at 15:00 CET, and the Opening ceremony of the event will take place shortly before the start of the games.
