ECU Elections and General Assembly 2026
- ECU legal adviser Mr. Marco Biagioli presented his verification report on the candidacies and nominations received by 17 April 2026. Mr Biagioli has requested additional information from candidates to complete his report, and the ECU Board decided to allow a few more days for clarifications. An extra ECU Board meeting will be held on Friday, 8 May 2026, to discuss and approve the report as letters received from candidates and federations. The ECU legal adviser will communicate directly with the interested parties.
- On the proposal of ECU Secretary General Mr Theodoros Tsorbatzglou, the ECU Board decided that all communications concerning the ECU elections 2026 will be handled by the ECU legal adviser, Mr Marco Biagioli, who has been working on this task since 20 April. Any related question, request, letter, proxy, must be addressed to secretariat@europechess.org for the official submission with a copy to Mr. Biagioli, marcobiagioli@outlook.com
- The ECU Board decided not to open any bid procedure during the electoral period (20th April – 18 July) to safeguard the procedure and authorize the Board that will be elected on 18th of July 2026.
- The ECU Board, based in the proposal of Mr. Biagioli, and answering also on requests have been received approved a code of conduct for all candidates valid for the electoral period and particularly from actions taken following the 30 April 2026, when this code of conduct was approved by the ECU Board, become known to candidates and the date was announced on the ECU website.
- The ECU Board noted the proposed rules for Associated members as has been prepared by the Ad hoc Committee appointed by the ECU General Assembly 2025, and will be forwarded by the agenda of the upcoming ECU General Assembly 2026.
European Championships
- The ECU Board awarded the European Corporate Chess Championship 2026 to Paris, France from 27 to 28 of November 2026.
- The rules of participation in the European Club Cup of players belonging before to Russian Chess Federation (CFR) and transferred to special FIDE flag status have been -updated as far only the deadline of the transfer: —players formerly belonging to the CFR and transferred to FIDE flag by 1st January 2026 (or before) have the right to play.
- The ECU Board decided to set, as in each cycle, the qualifications spots for the European Chess Championships for the FIDE World Cup 2027 to 40 and for the FIDE Women’s World Cup to 20. The spots distributed equally to the 2026 and 2027 respective European Championships. Thus according FIDE rules ECU will use 11 Continental spots for the Open and 9 Continental spots as distributed through the Chess Olympiad.
