Anish Giri wins Tata Steel Masters 2023

The 85th jubilee edition of the Tata Steel Chess took place from 14th-29th January 2023 in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands. The “Wimbledon of Chess” featured Masters, Challengers, and Amateur events simultaneously played in the same venue.

GM Anish Giri (NED, 2764) won the Masters event after a thrilling final round. Giri defeated Richard Rapport (ROU, 2740) to score 8.5/13 points and leaped on the top in front of Nodirbek Abdusatorov (UZB, 2713).

Abdusattorov was in the sole lead throughout the tournament, but suffered a loss against Jorden Van Foreest (NED, 2681) in the last game and finished the event tying for second place with Magnus Carlsen (NOR, 2859) who had the same score of 8/13 points.

Alexander Donchenko (GER, 2627) won the Challengers event with a round to spare. Donchenko eventually scored 10/13 points to be the sole Winner of the event, with Mustafa Yilmaz (TUR, 2609) trailing by a whole point. Javokhir Sindarov (UZB, 2654) finished third with 8.5 points.
