FIDE Candidates Tournament 2022
The FIDE Candidates Chess 2022 opens on Thursday 16th of June, and will be played from June 17th – July 5th in Madrid.
The tournament is played in 14 rounds, with participation of eight players. The winner of the event will qualify for the World Championship match later this year.
The magnificent Palacio de Santoña, a centrally located historic building in Madrid, will host one of the most anticipated chess tournaments of 2022. Built in 1730, this mansion boasts of distinguished carved granite baroque façade and is home to one of the most refined eclectic interiors in the Spanish capital. It is currently one of the headquarters of the Madrid Chamber of Commerce.

System of play:
14 rounds (double round-robin system) will be played with time control: 120 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 60 minutes for the next 20 moves and then 15 minutes for the rest of the game with an increment of 30 seconds per move starting from move 61. The total prize fund of the event is 500.000 EUR.
If two or more players tie for the top after 14 played rounds, the Winner will be determined in the Playoffs according to updated tiebreak rules of the event. If there are two players tied for the first place they will play a match of two rapid games (15 min + 10 sec). In case of a 3-6-way tie, a round-robin rapid tournament will be played (15 min + 10 sec).
If two players are tied after stage 1 of the playoffs, they will play a match of two blitz games (3 min + 2 sec). In case of a three-way tie (or more) a round-robin blitz tournament will be played (3 min + 2 sec). Finally, in case of another tie, depending on number of players, either knockout match or knockout tournament will be played. Each match consists of a single blitz game (3 min +2 sec). The colours will be determined by drawing of lots. In
case of a draw, another game will be played with the colours reversed. If
there is another draw, the opponents will play until the decisive outcome.
