European Senior Chess Championship 2023 starts in Italy
Everything is set for the 2023 European Senior Chess Championship which will be played from May 26 to June 3 in Acqui Terme, Italy.
The Championship is played in two age categories: 50+ and 65+, with Women’s 50+ section separately. Women’s 65+ championship will be merged with the Open competition, with separate prizes for the best female players.
The event broke the participation record with 180 players coming from more than 25 European federations. The top seeds are: GM John Nunn (ENG, 2579, 65+ category), GM Lubomir Ftacnik (SVK, 2467, 65+ category), GM Jose Luis Fernandez Garcia (ESP, 2368, 65+ category), IM Nils-Gustaf Renman (SWE, 2340, 65+ category), GM Nona Gaprindashvili (GEO, 2274, 65+ category), GM Zurab Sturua (GEO, 2521, 50+ category), GM Suat Atalik (SRB, 2441, 50+ category), IM Mark Van Der Werf (NED, 2412, 50+ category), IM Fabrizio Bellia (ITA, 2408, 50+ category), GM Keith Arkell (ENG, 2406, 50+ category), WGM Marina Makropoulou (GRE, 2113, Women’s 50+ category), WFM Olga Birkholz (GER, 1991, Women’s 50+ category), and Margarita Baliuniene (LTU, 1902, Women’s 50+ category).

The total prize fund of the Championship is 10.000 EUR. The Winners of the event will become European Senior Chess Champions 2023 of the respective category. According to FIDE Handbook D.03.7, the top 3 players from each category of the European Senior Championship 2023 are qualified with personal rights (free board and lodging) to the World Senior Championship 2024. Any change of regulations is a FIDE matter.
