During the recent years, after the agreement with FIDE, the Albanian Chess Federation, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Sports has given the top priority to the ‘Chess in Schools’ project, by introducing the chess activities to all schools in the country.

The agreement with the Ministry will be finalized in a short notice, with the presence of Mr. Zurab Azmaiparashvili, President of the European Chess Union, who will sign it along with the Albanian Minister of Education and Sports.

In the last 4 years, Sports Sector of QKF (Children’s Cultural Centre) in Durres, organizes the “National Schools Chess Championship“ in cooperation with the  Federation, in addition to the local chess championships.

The 2015 chess calendar started with the 6th Chess Championship. The event was held on 16th January incollaboration with FSHSH (Albanian Chess Federation) in two stages: qualifying categories & finals.

In this league attended Totally 27 schools, among which 6 private and 21 public schools and 280 pupils attended the tournament.

Girls and boys were divided into three categories according to the classes.

The opening ceremony of the Championship was held at the “A. Moisiu” Durres city Theatre, in presence of the children, parents, teachers, school directors and the representatives of the Regional Directory of Education and Albanian Chess Federation. After the national hymn, a 5 min documentary film about the history of chess was presented to the audience.

Mrs. Lindita Mukaj, Regional Director of Education and FIDE Master Fatos Muco made the first symbolic moves and officially opened the Championship. Games were monitored by chess instructor at QKF Durres, Mr.Harallamb Boshku (FIDE Master).

The closing ceremony was also held on the stage of the Theatre “A.Moisiu”, with the presence of several directors of the participating schools, the director of RED, QKF Director and Secretary General the FSHSH. The winners were awarded with trophies and certificates, and Albanian Chess Federation donated chess books to the teachers and the finalists.

The winners of this championship will attend the chess classes at QKF-Durres for the future local, national and international participations.

In May 2015, QKF Durres, in collaboration with FSHSH will organize the 5th National Chess Championship, while the other cities will organize local chess championships.

The Jersey Chess Federation announces the Polar Capital Jersey International Chess Tournament which will be held in March, 15-20 2015, in St Clement Bay, Jersey.


The Official venue is the Hotel Ambassadeur

Sponsors of the event are Polar Capital, Jersey Tourism, the One Foundation and Nautilus Trust Limited.

The event consists of three tournaments: Open Tournament, Holiday Tournament and Nautilus Jersey Blitz Championship.

The Open tournament will be played according to the Swiss System in 9 rounds, with time control 90 minutes for the whole game + 30 seconds increment per move. The Highest ranked players who are not already qualified will qualify for the 2015 British Championship. The first prize at the Open tournament is £1500.

Holiday Tournament is for players with ELO Rating 1900 and will be played in 7 rounds. The first prize is £400.

Jersey Open Blitz Tournament, Sponsored by Nautilus Trust Limited will be held on Wednesday 18th March, starting at 7.00 pm. The first prize is £150.

The total Prize fund is £ 4725, including trophies and other special prizes.

On January 12 Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs of the Republic of Armenia, Mr. Gabriel Ghazaryan on the occasion of 60th anniversary and for the unique services in the field of Physical Culture and Sport awarded the Vice President of Chess Federation of Armenia, the Chairman of Rules Committee of the World Chess Federation (FIDE), the Chairman of the European Chess Union Arbiter’s Council, well known International Arbiter Ashot Vardapetyan with the gold medal of the Ministry.


The Minister congratulated the famous referee on his anniversary, wishing further productive work, success and professional achievements.


National Olympic Committee of Armenia awarded Mr. Vardapetyan with Albert Azaryan Medal.

European Women Championship

The European Individual Women Chess Championship will take place in Georgia from 18th to 31st of May 2015.

The proposal of the Georgian Chess Federation to the European Chess Union includes 75.000 EUR as the total prize fund (60.000 EUR net for the players) and all the organizational expenses covered.

The exact venue and all the details will be published in the tournament invitation by the end of January.

European Chess Union expresses its thanks to the Georgian Chess Federation for the constant support to the major chess events and especially to the Women’s chess where Georgia has a great tradition and two chess legends, World champions Nona Gaprindashvili and Maia Chiburdanidze.

European Chess Union administration completed in a short term the whole European Calendar for 2015, managing at the same time to improve the conditions and prize fund for the European Individual Chess Championship in Jerusalem (23.02 – 08.03.2015).


CONI Expo Sport Open Day – The CONI Epiphany stocking enters in the Guinness World Record, promoted by CONI Event Point and included in the program “WhiteWinter 2014-2015” by the City of Milan, Italy. The event was organized on 6th January to involve children and adults, invited to support the longest sock in the world, and was open to all.


“A unique opportunity to join together in a celebration of sharing, inclusion and solidarity through sport, to make people feel that the city is ready to welcome the sports federations that supported event and by next months will be represented by athletes from all over the world during Expo Milan 2015 Fair”, said the President of CONI Regional Lombardy Committee, Mr. Pierluigi Marzorati.

The audience was great protagonist, along with some groups of cheerleader federations and athletes who, by their presence, communicate the importance of sport and its values, and together they had the task to support the stocking.


Among other events and projects, chess had an important role during the CONI Expo Sport Open Day. There was set up a large area available for children, teens and adults, managed by Chess Projects.

Two giant chess and many chess sets and chess clocks were available for those who wanted to try this exciting “sport of the mind” with the assistance of qualified FSI instructors.


Once again, chess, as a mind sport, has shown that is able to compete on equal terms and with equal dignity with classic sports, even during massive and developmental events as “CONI Expo Sport Open Day “organized in downtown Milan at famous Duomo square, right in front of gothic cathedral!

On this occasion President of Chess Projects, Mr. Matteo Zoldan, enthusiast and energetic player, instructor and FIDE International Organiser was awarded, along with representatives of other sports present (fencing, golf, table tennis, volleyball), with a medal of remembrance, for ‘efforts provided to promote sport’ (chess as well), during this and further past events organized by CONI in the city of Milan.


The day ended on main stage with an exciting BLITZ (5 minutes) challenge in two games between two master category players, which took place with the giant chess, and Mr. Zoldan as a commentator, who has been able to engage the audience. The first game ended in a draw, while second finished with a decisive result, in the final seconds left on clock of both players.

After the first event organised on 1st November in the center of Milan, at fashionable and modern Gae Aulenti square, this is the second of chess events organised in Milan downtown to open the road to Expo Milan 2015, starting on May with the end in October.

Actually during Expo Milan 2015, Chess Projects  and Accademia Scacchi Milano will organise a huge event with multiple tournaments (classic, blitz, rapid, youth). The first of them will be the International Chess Tournament dedicated to Italian and foreign players coming from worldwide to enjoy Expo 2015 and city of Milan.



Vienna Chess Federation & Austrian Chess Federation under the auspices of the European Chess Union organizes the European Senior Team Chess Championship in Vienna/Austria, from 12-20 July, 2015. Playing venue and accommodation will be in the Hotel AIRO Wien.

Entitled to participate are men who have reached the age of 60 years and women who have reached the age of 50 years, by December 31st, 2015. Each team shall consist of four players in fixed order. Additionally one reserve player can be nominated who is only allowed to play on board 4. If women teams participate, a special ranking will be organized.

The “4th European Small Nations Team Championship” will be held from April 18th (arrival) to 26th 2015 (departure) in St Peter Port, Guernsey.

Federations participating in the event are as follows:

Each team consists of four players; in addition, one reserve player may be nominated.

The playing venue will be the Harry Bound room at Les Cotils (views from the playing hall of the neighbouring islands Herm and Sark).  The accommodation will be at the Albany apartments (about 10 minutes’ walk from the venue).


The championship will be played using the 9-round round-robin system. Starting numbers will be drawn at the Opening Ceremony. The time control will be 90 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the rest of the game + 30 seconds increment for each move starting from move one.

There will be prizes for top three teams and a special prize for best player of each board (single board Prizes).

On December 30 of 2014, the programme of chess development (2015-2018) has been approved by the government.

Programme objectives:

• Measures to support promotion and development of chess in Georgia.

• Trainings for Georgian National and Age teams to reach to appropriate level and for the players to compete successfully in international competitions.

• International competitions shall be held to a high level.

The Hungarian Chess Federation organized the World Youth U-16 Chess Olympiad for teams in Győr (Hungary) from 12-22 December 2014.


The event gathered 256 young chess players from 37 countries, and after 10 rounds the best among them became the team of India. Indians scored 18 match points, full point ahead the silver Russia. Bronze went to the team of Iran with 16 match points.


Great organization and a very successful youth event was confirmed by the words of Mr. Theodoros Tsorbatzoglou, Secretary General of the European Chess Union and FIDE Events Comission Delegate at the opening ceremony of the tournament . Mr. Tsorbatzoglou expressed his belief that Hungary and Gyor would be an excellent host of the Youth Olympiad.


“A country that gives to chess World Champions, legend players, great teams, Olympic medalists.  We are pleased to have today with the us the greatest ever of the women chess players Grand Master Judith Polgar. Gyor and Hungary is the right place to host and popularize this event . The participation of 40 countries and more than 50 teams is the evidence on this.

He stated that FIDE and European Chess Union are proud to organize World Youth U16 Olympiad in Gyor and they hope that soon there will be more completions of our calendar to take place in Hungary.


Mr. Martin Huba, ECU Treasurer represented the European Chess Union at the closing ceremony and rewarded the winners.
