Circular Letter No. 04/2008
Dear Friends,
The tournament schedule of the European Club Cup 2008 in Kallithea/Greece, which was published in our last Circular Letter, was incorrect. The organising committee has changed it. Please find the updated invitation attached.
The organising committee of this year's European Individual Championships in Plovdiv has informed us that all hotels mentioned in the official announcement offer lunch and dinner for 10 EUR each. If requested full board can be booked upon arrival.
The European Amateur Championships 2008 will take place in Pardubice/Czech Republic from 19 to 26 July. They will be held within the frame of the traditional Czech Open International Festival.
Each continent can nominate 10 arbiters for the Chess Olympiad in Dresden from 12 to 25 November 2008. All federations are requested to send proposals to the ECU secretariat by 15 April 2008. The ECU Board will make the decision for Europe at the next meeting in Plovdiv/Bulgaria on 19 and 20 April 2008.
On 17 March 2008 in Brdo, Slovenia, the Sports Ministers and Presidents of the National Olympic Committees of the EU Member States adopted a Joint Declaration on "Social Significance and Dialogue in Sport". On the occasion of the Slovenian EU Presidency Dr Milan Zver, the Slovenian Minister for Sport and Education had invited to this meeting.
In close co-operation with ECU President Boris Kutin it had been agreed to put the item "Position and Role of Chess" on the agenda. Besides him FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov presented the current situation of chess in the world and Anatoly Karpov gave a picture of his own experience as sportsman.
In addition Boris Kutin and ECU Secretary General Horst Metzing met with Ján Figel', European Commissioner in charge of sport, and informed him about the chess activities in Europe and the initiatives within the EU Member States. It was agreed to establish close contacts to the EU Sport Unit.
The Ukrainian Chess Federation informed us that Mr Sergey Chernozem has been appointed as its Executive Director.
Best regards,
Horst Metzing
Secretary General
